CommunicationsSpecialist

You write on behalf of the organization. Which audience you write for changes the job completely, and the title never says which.

What the title covers

The constant is writing on behalf of an organization rather than in your own voice. Everything else changes with the audience. Writing for employees means announcements, leadership messages, benefits explanations and telling several thousand people about a change they did not ask for. Writing for the press means releases, pitching journalists and preparing someone else to be quoted accurately. Writing for customers means blog posts, newsletters and social copy, which is marketing work under a different name. Many postings combine two of these, and at smaller organizations one person does all three because they are the entire function.

A second use of this title

Same title, different audience

The three versions reward different people. Internal communications rewards patience, discretion and an ear for how a message will land with people who work there. Media relations rewards speed, relationships with journalists and composure when the story is unflattering. Content and marketing communications rewards volume and a feel for search and social. Someone excellent at one can be genuinely poor at another.

Read the posting for the audience rather than for the tasks. Employees, intranet, leadership and change management describe the first job. Press release, media list, pitch and spokesperson describe the second. Blog, newsletter, campaign and search describe the third. A posting naming all three is describing a one person department, which is the broadest experience available and also the heaviest workload.

Where it is found

Almost every organization large enough to need to explain itself to somebody, which is why the work varies so much by employer.

Corporate communications teamsUsually internal or media focused, with a defined approval chain before anything is published.
AgenciesMedia relations across several clients at once. The fastest way to learn pitching and the fastest pace to learn it in.
Government and public agenciesPublic notices, records requests and community meetings, with firm rules about what may be said and who may say it.
Nonprofits, hospitals and universitiesFrequently the entire communications function in one person, which means broad experience and a heavy load.

Typical entry requirements

Expected
Writing clean copy quickly, and taking edits without defensiveness
Frequently required
Writing samples. This is one of the few fields where a portfolio outweighs the resume
Often listed
A content management system, an email platform, and at press focused employers a media database such as Cision or Muck Rack
Experience
Zero to three years. Student newspaper, campus agency and internship work count for more here than in most fields

What a typical day may look like

The request below is typical of how this kind of work is assigned. The steps that follow describe what completing it involves.

Your communications director4:10 PM
The new platform ships on the fifteenth. I need the employee note, the press release, and something for whoever takes the reporter call.

Drafts by Friday noon.

01

Find out what the product does on day one and what is still coming later, because the questions afterward will be about exactly the parts nobody clarified.

02

Confirm who hears it first and in what order. Customers finding out before the support team does is the failure this task exists to prevent.

03

Write the employee note first and lead with what changes for them, including who will be asked about this and where to send people.

04

Say plainly what is not ready yet and when it will be, rather than describing it as though everything arrived at once.

05

Write the press release separately rather than trimming the employee note, because the two audiences need different first sentences.

06

Send both to legal and to the product team at the same time rather than one after the other, and put the deadline in the message.

07

Prepare the five questions a reporter will ask, including the one comparing this to a competitor, and the answers your spokesperson can actually give.

What is delivered

An employee note, a press release, and a short question and answer document for whoever takes the call. All three reviewed, dated, and accompanied by a note of what remains unconfirmed.

What this work pays

Two numbers, because they answer two different questions. The first is what you would be paid in your first job. The second is what people in this field earn after they have been doing it for years.

Starting out
$68,873Average starting salary, business graduates, Class of 2026

This is the average across all business graduates rather than this role specifically. Entry level communications roles commonly start below it, particularly at nonprofits, public agencies and small firms, where the trade is usually a much wider range of work.

After several years
$69,780Middle of the range across everyone in this field

The lowest paid ten percent earn under $40,750 and the highest paid ten percent earn more than $129,480. That is an unusually wide spread for one title, and it reflects the three different jobs sitting inside it.

The audience you write for follows you

Three or four years of internal communications makes you a strong candidate for internal communications roles and a weaker one for media relations. The reverse is equally true. On a resume the title looks identical either way, so the specialisation stays invisible until someone asks about it in an interview. Decide reasonably early which audience you want to be known for writing to. If a posting covers all three, treat it as a chance to find out rather than as a permanent assignment.

GOVERNMENT DATA DOES NOT LIST COMMUNICATIONS SPECIALIST SEPARATELY, SO THE SECOND FIGURE USES THE CLOSEST PUBLISHED JOB CATEGORY.
