What the title covers
The word coordinator describes a level of seniority rather than a function, which is why the job varies so much. You support a marketing team by carrying out work someone else planned. That usually means scheduling and publishing social posts, building and sending emails, updating pages on the website, ordering materials for events, recording campaign results in a spreadsheet, and keeping the calendar accurate. The range across employers is unusually wide. At a small company you may own an entire channel within a few months. At a large one you may spend a year formatting other people's work without deciding any of it.
A second use of this title
The split here is not between two industries. It is between two levels of responsibility sold under one title. On a small marketing team, a coordinator often owns email or social outright, chooses what goes out, and sees the results. On a large team, the same title can mean routing approvals, booking vendors, formatting slides and maintaining a calendar for the people who do the marketing.
The posting usually gives it away. Verbs like own, run, test and analyze describe the first job. Verbs like support, assist, coordinate, maintain and schedule describe the second. Count which kind appears more often before applying, and in the interview ask what the last person in this role was promoted into.
Where it is found
Nearly every industry employs them, which is a large part of why the title means so many different things.
