What the title covers
You do not build the product and you do not close the deal. You sit on a sales team and remove technical doubt so the deal can close. The work is technical discovery to understand how a customer's systems are put together, product demonstrations built for that specific customer rather than a generic script, answers to security and integration questions, and trial installations the customer runs before committing. You are paired with an Account Executive, often one to one, and part of your pay usually depends on that person reaching their number. The word engineer is accurate about the knowledge required and misleading about what you spend the day doing.
A second use of this title
In many companies, particularly outside software, Solutions Engineer or Systems Engineer describes a role that begins after the contract is signed. That job configures and deploys the product for the customer, carries no quota, and is measured on delivery rather than revenue. It is a good job and a completely different one.
A posting that mentions discovery, demonstrations, proof of concept or variable compensation is describing the pre-sale role. A posting that mentions onboarding, implementation, deployment or customer success is describing the post-sale one. The term pre-sales in a posting settles the question immediately.
Where it is found
Software companies almost entirely, plus manufacturers and suppliers selling equipment complex enough that the buyer needs convincing it will work.
