What the title covers
Neither word in this title describes the job. There is no account to look after and nothing about it is executive. You are assigned a quota, which is a revenue figure you are expected to bring in over a set period, usually three months. The work is running sales conversations from a first meeting through to a signed contract, including discovery calls, product demonstrations, written proposals, pricing negotiation, and the closing itself. Some of the people you speak with are found for you by someone else. The rest you find yourself. Your progress against the number is reported weekly and is usually visible to the whole team.
A second use of this title
In advertising, media, public relations and staffing, Account Executive still carries its older meaning, which is looking after clients the company already has. That job coordinates work between the client and the internal team, keeps projects moving, and reports on results. It usually carries no quota, or a small renewal target rather than a new business one.
A posting that mentions quota, pipeline, on target earnings or a CRM system is describing the sales job. A posting that mentions client servicing, campaign coordination, deliverables or status meetings is describing the other one. Both are real jobs. They ask for almost nothing in common.
Where it is found
Any company that sells to other businesses rather than to the public, which is a much larger share of the economy than most graduates expect.
Typical entry requirements
- Education
- Bachelor's degree in any major. Very few employers ask for a specific field of study
- Expected
- Willingness to speak with strangers by phone every day, and to keep going after being turned down
- Frequently required
- Familiarity with a customer records system, usually Salesforce or HubSpot
- Often listed
- One to two years of sales experience, which in practice usually means time already spent as a Sales Development Representative
- Experience
- Most entry level openings at software companies are filled by promoting someone internally after twelve to eighteen months, so applying directly from graduation is harder than the posting suggests
