What the title covers
The teams that bring in money, meaning sales, marketing and customer success, run on a handful of connected systems and a very large amount of imperfect data. This job keeps both working. That means correcting records in the customer system, building the dashboards leadership actually reads, setting up how incoming leads are routed and how territories are divided, checking that commission calculations are right before anyone is paid, and answering questions such as why conversion fell in one region last month. It is a support function positioned unusually close to the money, which is why the requests arrive quickly and why the work is noticed.
A second use of this title
Sales Operations, Marketing Operations and Deal Desk existed as separate jobs first. Revenue Operations is the idea of running all three as one function so that the numbers agree across them. At companies that genuinely merged the three, this role spans all of it. At companies that renamed their sales operations team without changing anything underneath, it is the older job wearing a newer title.
The posting usually reveals which. Pipeline, forecasting and CRM administration alone describe sales operations. Marketing automation, attribution and lead scoring describe marketing operations. Quoting, approvals, discounting and contract terms describe deal desk. A posting naming all three is either real revenue operations or one person being asked to cover three jobs, and the way to tell is to ask how many people are on the team.
Where it is found
Concentrated in businesses that sell on subscription, where measuring the revenue engine closely is worth the cost of a team to do it.
