What the title covers
Consulting work where the subject is the workforce. A client company has a question it cannot answer from the inside, and the firm is paid by the project to answer it. The questions are things like how this organization should be structured after a merger, why one division loses people and the others do not, what it will take to move fifteen thousand employees onto a new way of working, or whether the pay structure is doing what the company thinks it is.
You sit on a project team of three to six people for six to sixteen weeks. You build the analysis for one part of the question and turn it into slides a more senior person presents. You do not decide the recommendation. You build the evidence it rests on.
A second use of this title
Firms name the practice, not the job. The entry level title for a new graduate is usually Analyst, Associate or Business Analyst, and the thing that identifies this work is the practice name attached to it. Search the practice rather than the title: Human Capital, Workforce Transformation, People Advisory, Talent and Organization, People and Change, Organization Effectiveness. Practice names change every few years, so read the description rather than trusting the label.
Three different jobs also sit under these practice names. Organization and workforce strategy is closest to what students picture. HR technology implementation, meaning rolling out a system such as Workday, is a large share of the actual headcount and is a technology delivery job with a people subject. Compensation and benefits consulting is quantitative and specialized. The responsibilities section separates them.
