What the title covers

A small team that gets handed whatever the most important unresolved question is this quarter. Why did the metric move. Should we enter this market. Why does this process take eleven days when it should take four. What would it cost to change it.

The difference from consulting is that you do not leave. You answer the question, and then you are involved in making the answer real, which means working with the teams who have to change what they do. The work is analytical at the front and operational at the back.

A second use of this title

Same word, a very different job

This is not the same as an Operations Analyst, and the distinction matters more here than almost anywhere else in this library. Operations Analyst in banking, insurance or logistics frequently means back office processing or transaction work, with a defined process and a defined ceiling.

Strategy and Operations describes cross functional problem solving close to leadership. The signals are in the posting rather than the title. Reporting into a chief of staff, a general manager or an executive points at this version. Named systems, transaction volumes and queues point at the other. Read the reporting line before the responsibilities.

Where it is found

Concentrated in companies large enough to have unresolved problems and fast moving enough not to have solved them yet.

Technology and marketplace companiesWhere the function is most defined, often organized by business line with a named analyst programme.
High growth and recently scaled businessesThe team that exists because the company outgrew its own processes.
Large corporationsUsually called Business Operations or internal strategy, sitting under a business unit leader rather than a central strategy team.
Healthcare systems and financial servicesA slower and more structured version of the same work, often with a longer approval chain.

Typical entry requirements

SQL, or a demonstrated willingness to learn it quickly

Experience
Zero to two years, though many of these teams prefer to hire after two years elsewhere

What a typical day may look like

The request below is typical of how this kind of work is assigned. The steps that follow describe what completing it involves.

Your head of business operations7:20 AM
Two of our five regions are missing their delivery times and nobody can tell me whether that is a staffing problem or a process problem. Leadership meeting is Thursday.

Three days.

01

Define the measure before analysing anything, because delivery time can be counted from the order, from dispatch or from the promise date, and the three produce different answers.

02

Pull the timestamps for every step rather than asking each region where it thinks the delay is, since people report the step they own.

03

Compare the two failing regions against the three that are meeting the target, because the differences between them are the fastest route to a cause.

04

Check staffing directly so it can be ruled in or out with evidence. Hours worked against volume handled, by region, by week.

05

Find the step where the two regions diverge from the others, then go and watch it or talk to the people doing it, because the data shows where and people show why.

06

Cost the fix. More staff, a process change, or a change in what the company promises the customer.

07

Write the recommendation with the decision on the first page, and name what you would need to be true for it to be wrong.

What is delivered

A short set of slides naming where the delay occurs, whether staffing explains it, two options with costs attached, and a recommendation with the assumption it depends on stated plainly.

What this work pays

Two numbers, because they answer two different questions. The first is what you would be paid in your first job. The second is what people in this field earn after they have been doing it for years.

Starting out
$68,873Average starting salary, business graduates, Class of 2026

This is the average across all business graduates rather than this role specifically. Technology companies generally start above it, and the same title at a traditional employer sits closer to it.

After several years
$101,190Middle of the range across everyone in this field

Government data has no business operations category, so this uses management analysts, which covers consulting and internal advisory work together. The lowest paid ten percent earn under $59,720.

The seat is scarcer than the postings suggest

Many of these teams prefer to hire people who spent two years in consulting or banking first, which means the number of genuine entry level openings is smaller than the number of job titles you will see. Where undergraduate hiring exists it usually runs through a named analyst programme or an internship conversion, so look for those specifically.
